Individualized Medicine
Individualized medicine is transforming the way serious diseases are managed. Monogram's tests are helping make the promise of individualized medicine a reality.
Although many serious diseases, such as HIV and cancer, can be characterized at the molecular level, growing evidence indicates that many drugs simply do not work optimally for an entire population of patients within these broad disease categories. The biopharmaceutical industry is witnessing two mutually dependent innovations:
- Targeted therapies that act on very specific disease mechanisms, which may not be present in all patients with a broadly defined disease; and
- Predictive tests that may be able to determine in advance how likely a patient is to respond to a certain drug
Based on these innovations, a new approach to disease management — individualized medicine — is emerging. A key step is to use diagnostic tests to identify the most effective treatment options for an individual patient. The goal of individualized medicine is to move from a "one drug suits all" approach to providing the right treatment to the right patient at the right time.
